“Med spa” has become a catch-all term. These days it can describe almost anything from a medically-supervised clinic to a salon offering injectables on the side. So when patients ask me what makes Skin + Aesthetics different, my honest answer is: we’re not just a med spa, we’re an aesthetic dermatology clinic. And that distinction is bigger than it sounds.

Two businesses can both call themselves a “med spa” while being worlds apart in training, oversight, and philosophy. That’s not a knock on the category; it’s just why the label alone doesn’t tell you much.

What “aesthetic dermatology” adds

Aesthetic dermatology means the cosmetic work is grounded in dermatologic, medical training, AKA an understanding of skin as an organ, not just a surface. In practice, that shows up as:

• A medical lens on everything. Before we treat a brown spot, we consider whether it’s truly just sun damage or something that should be evaluated and referred out, and that is based on my extensive experience in dermatology for over a decade prior to opening my own aesthetic clinic. Before we recommend a treatment, we look at your skin’s biology, your history, and your safety… not just the cosmetic goal. This approach requires the knowledge and experience only gained from truly knowing skin and has led to identification and treatment of multiple cancerous/malignant lesions rather than masking them with aesthetic treatments.
• Treating concerns at the root. Acne, melasma, rosacea, hair loss.. these are conditions with causes. Because of my background in dermatology, I spent years learning from the best in the specialty about the pathophysiology or the “why” behind the disease and disorder processes. As such, we aim to understand and address the cause in the clinic, not just chase the symptom with whatever’s trending or what will make the most money.
• Evidence over hype. New devices and “miracle” treatments appear constantly. We choose what to offer based on whether the science actually supports it and we’re just as willing to tell you a treatment isn’t right for you. • Real medical oversight. Care is delivered by qualified medical providers with a collaborating physician, so there’s genuine clinical accountability behind your treatment. Care within the clinic means initial assessment by a board-certified Nurse Practitioner with nearly 15 years of experience in dermatology and plastic surgery, collaborative care with a board-certified physician that’s on site multiple times a month and in constant communication with the clinic, and an entire board of colleagues that include specialties such as dermatology, plastic surgery, ENT, etc. to ensure that your care is the best we can possibly offer.

Why med spa vs aesthetic dermatology matters for you

Here’s the practical reason any of this should matter to you as a patient:

Safety. Injectables and lasers are medical procedures with real (even if rare) risks. The training and preparedness behind the treatment directly affect how safe you are and how well a complication would be handled if one ever arose. (It’s why we use ultrasound to make filler safer.)

Honest guidance. When a clinic’s expertise runs deep, you’re more likely to be told the truth, including “you don’t need that,” or “a different treatment would serve you better.” That kind of restraint is hard to fake, and it’s worth everything.

Better, more natural results. Understanding skin as an organ (how it ages, heals, and responds) is what lets us build a plan that looks like you, just refreshed. Not overdone. Not generic.
