“Med spa” has become a catch-all term. These days it can describe almost anything from a medically-supervised clinic to a salon offering injectables on the side. So when patients ask me what makes Skin + Aesthetics different, my honest answer is: we’re not just a med spa, we’re an aesthetic dermatology clinic. And that distinction is bigger than it sounds.
Let me explain what it actually means and why I classify my clinic as an aesthetic dermatology clinic and not a med spa, so you can make informed choices about your skin no matter where you go.

A medical spa, broadly, blends spa-style services with treatments that are medical in nature… things like injectables, lasers, and medical-grade skincare. The concept is wonderful. Truly. The catch is that the term itself is loosely used and lightly standardized, so the level of medical expertise behind the name varies enormously from one place to the next, and that’s what’s bothered me most.
Two businesses can both call themselves a “med spa” while being worlds apart in training, oversight, and philosophy. That’s not a knock on the category; it’s just why the label alone doesn’t tell you much.
Aesthetic dermatology means the cosmetic work is grounded in dermatologic, medical training, AKA an understanding of skin as an organ, not just a surface. In practice, that shows up as:

Here’s the practical reason any of this should matter to you as a patient:
Safety. Injectables and lasers are medical procedures with real (even if rare) risks. The training and preparedness behind the treatment directly affect how safe you are and how well a complication would be handled if one ever arose. (It’s why we use ultrasound to make filler safer.)
Honest guidance. When a clinic’s expertise runs deep, you’re more likely to be told the truth, including “you don’t need that,” or “a different treatment would serve you better.” That kind of restraint is hard to fake, and it’s worth everything.
Better, more natural results. Understanding skin as an organ (how it ages, heals, and responds) is what lets us build a plan that looks like you, just refreshed. Not overdone. Not generic.
Treating the whole person. It’s why we built programs for patients the industry often overlooks… from rejuvenation after major weight loss to gentle, oncology-aware care for cancer survivors. That comes from seeing skin care as health care.
You don’t have to take anyone’s word for “med spa” vs. anything else. Just ask:
The answers will tell you far more than the sign on the door. (For injectables specifically, here’s a deeper guide to choosing a safe injector.)
A med spa can be excellent and there’s nothing wrong with them, but the label just doesn’t guarantee it. “Aesthetic dermatology” describes a deeper standard: cosmetic care built on medical training, honest judgment, evidence, and genuine oversight. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to, because your skin deserves nothing less.
If you’d like care that treats your skin like the living organ it is, come see the difference for yourself. Learn more about us → or book a visit →.
Is a med spa safe? Many are excellent. Because the term is loosely used, though, safety depends on the specific clinic’s medical training, oversight, and preparedness — so it’s always worth asking who’s treating you and who supervises care.
Do I need a dermatologist for cosmetic treatments? Not necessarily, but you want a provider with strong medical training and oversight. Aesthetic dermatology brings a medical, skin-as-an-organ lens to cosmetic care.
What questions should I ask before booking anywhere? Ask who performs the treatment and their credentials, who the medical director is, how they choose treatments, and how they handle complications.
What makes Skin + Aesthetics different? We’re an aesthetic dermatology clinic — cosmetic care grounded in medical training, evidence over hype, real oversight, and honest, personalized guidance.
